Republic of Romania

Romania is a diverse and accessible country, attracting travelers from across Europe – whether for a holiday, business trip, or transit.

To drive on Romanian national roads, you must have a valid electronic vignette – called the rovinieta.

Types of Romanian motorway vignettes

Which vehicles require a Rovinieta?

  • Passenger cars up to 3.5 tonnes.
  • Vans and light commercial vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes.
  • Buses and minibuses intended for passenger transport.
  • Goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes.

Where is the Romanian motorway vignette required?

The Romanian Rovinieta applies not only to motorways but also to a broader network of selected national roads. Some of the most frequently used routes include:

  • A0 – Bucharest Motorway Ring Road
  • A1 – Bucharest – Pitești – Sibiu – Nădlac
  • A2 – Bucharest – Constanța
  • A3 – Bucharest – Ploiești – Brașov / Oradea – Borș

The Rovinieta is linked to the vehicle registration number and its validity is verified electronically. Before travelling, we recommend checking the entered details and the selected validity period.

What should you check before travelling to Romania?

Romanian regulations place particular emphasis on mandatory vehicle equipment. Before departure, we recommend checking that your vehicle contains everything required in the event of a breakdown or roadside inspection.

In Romania, it is mandatory to have, for example:

  • two warning triangles.
  • a first aid kit.
  • a fire extinguisher.
  • winter tyres in snow, ice or frosty conditions.
  • daytime running lights or dipped headlights when driving outside built-up areas.

Roadside inspections in Romania focus not only on the validity of the Rovinieta, but also on the vehicle's technical condition and compliance with mandatory equipment requirements.

Practical information for travelling in Romania

  • The Rovinieta can be purchased for periods ranging from 1 day up to 12 months, depending on the vehicle type.
  • In addition to the Rovinieta, additional charges may apply on certain routes, for example for bridges or ferries across the Danube.
  • When travelling to the Black Sea coast or towards the Bulgarian border, we recommend checking in advance whether your route includes sections with additional charges.

Speed limits:

  • 130 km/h on motorways, 100 km/h on roads for motor vehicles.
  • 90 km/h outside urban areas
  • 50 km/h in built-up areas

Drivers who have held a driving licence for less than one year are subject to reduced speed limits outside built-up areas.

Different speed limits apply to vehicles with trailers and motorhomes. Before travelling, we recommend checking the maximum permitted speed based on the vehicle type and road category.
